Fried Chicken

I'm gonna let you all in a little secret. I have never cut up a whole chicken and I certainly had never fried one. Usually I just buy breasts for the grill or baking and the whole goes in the oven to bake. I never thought I had what it took to make the illusive Southern treat. But yesterday Grim and I took the plunge. We each got a chicken to cut up.... Of course he was much better at it then me but that's ok, cause now he gets to do that all the time now! Sorry honey....LOL! We deep fried it on the stove in Crisco. The breading was flour with spices, egg and then panko bread crumbs.

We realized that we have been very foolish all these years buying it. It was time consuming but so worth the effort. I know this will sound funny.... this afternoon I opened the bag to get a piece of chicken for lunch and it smelled like fried chicken..... I know, I'm such a dork. But I took that as a sign of a job well done!

We have been eating out of our stores to purposely dwindle them down. I try to do this every other year. That way I know for sure that we have rotated everything. I am looking forward to some big purchases later this year... 1/2 a cow and 1/2 a pig. I need to get my canner cleaned off as strawberries are in season as of this past Wednesday. So it begins again.

I have finished my uncle's afghan. Hopefully, I will get a few shots of it in natural light. Its suppose to be rainy for the next couple days so it might be awhile for the pics, the work is done though! Yeah!!!

I saw the first one of the season tonight.... I would have liked to have seen more but since it rained today the mosquito's were out in force and the citronella candles did not deter them so I had to come back in the house. To bad, because it is such a nice night.

I'm sure I'll be back out there tomorrow night since it is suppose to be in the 90's during the day for the next two days.

Gone but not Forgotten

I can’t believe that its been over two weeks since I posted anything of any importance. It's not that nothing has happened its just that we have been so busy that I haven’t had time to sit and collect my thoughts. We are still working on the new and improved garden area. We need to level off the house side where the raised beds were. Once that is done I have grass seed to put down.

The front yard has also gotten a bit of a makeover. We extended the beds out on both sides of the yard. I added quite a few perennials. This was done mainly because noisy neighbor decided about a month ago to come into my yard and spray weed killer all over my lawn. The end result was that I had great big dead patches in my lawn…. Because I have a lot of clover and that’s what he killed. He has always done things to annoy me but this was the last straw…. to the point that I put a sign on the fence that read “to whomever put chemicals on my yard stay off my property!” So that I guess embarrassed him and now he glares at me…. I really don’t care he had no right and no he has to deal with us being out side way more then we usually are…. See he runs an unauthorized business out of his back yard…. You know where he can work in peace, making all the noise he wants cause the wife is in the house with the air on and can’t hear him. But everyone else in the neighborhood has no choice. Well, me and the monsters have been outside everyday working or cleaning or planting. He hates it…. I know cause he keeps sighing…. LOL! Oh well, to bad noisy neighbor! LOL!

I think that the Mallow is just gorgeous! So I wanted to show you a better picture of it. What do you think of my dark purple / black bearded iris’s…. Well that’s what they were labeled. It was my own fault I bought them before they had opened and the tags were wrong. LOL!

So that is what I’ve been doing recently…. As soon as I get time I still need to finish my uncles lap-ghan and the quilt… Oh and I bought material to make a skirt. Lots to do and so little time…

I hope you all have a great day!

An hour outside

The rotting crud seems to have decided finally to leave me in peace. With the rain taking a break, I thought it was a good time to get outside. Right before I got sick, the lavender and the blueberry tires were weeded. Also I was able to get about half of the grape/rhubarb/coneflower bed weeded. So I got out there and finished off that bed. Then I added another bag of mulch. I got it on sale last year…(it was suppose to go down in the fall but the weather didn’t cooperate.)

I pulled some weeds out of the daylily bed. Not as many as I would have thought but they are really filling out. I need to get one maybe two more and that bed will be done. I pulled some of my pots to get some seeds started. Chamomile and calendula are now in the hanging pots right outside the back door. Then I went into the BEAR garden (LOL, Skippy) and looked for a ground pot….. Guess what I found….. One of the blueberries in a pot, that I thought didn’t survive from the garden debacle actually has some growth on it. So that got moved over by the others. Then I cleaned out the weeds from another pot and planted nasturtiums.

I am hoping to borrow or buy a roto-tiller in the next couple weeks. The Bear garden needs to be tilled before I can get in there to do the renovation. It is going to look so nice. And everything that is along noisy neighbors side will be in pots up on blocks. So then when he sprays whatever it is that he uses to kill with it won’t be in the roots of my plants. Good thing I pulled the veggies out of that area…. God only knows what chemicals he was putting in the ground.

Anyways, I got to see a robin take a bath in the bird bath. The mason bees and a bumble were very intent on that yellow weed, I showed you the other day. These butterflies were covering it, too. So now I need to find out what type of weed it is and if I can transplant it. I would love to have more of it growing. I love the butterflies and bees in the yard!
