Homestead Happenings

How is everyone doing today? Good I hope! We are all fighting off a little bug, nothing major, just annoying. Grim, was home most of the day today. So we went to one of the area parks, it is a metro park... Now it's not a State Park or a County Park.... But you have to pay to get a membership for the year. They have nature centers and walking/bicycle paths. Wooded nature walking trails are what we hit today. There were tons of deer. They kept hopping out of the bush onto the trail right in front of us. Very Kewl!

Then since we were already out it was time to see if my farm markets were open yet. Nope, not till the end of the month. But I did stop to see the old farmer.... he usually has stuff to sell. I wasn't dissappointed. I got foodhook, italian rose beans and purple hull beans. I also got a flat of romaine lettuce. After we got home I had to get off my lazy butt and clean out one of the beds. So now that is done and the 24 heads of romaine are planted. In about 3 weeks I will go back and get another flat for another box. That way I can stagger them. I know what your thinking why not grow them from seed. Lettuce hates me. I have tried before and I will try again at another time. But since I want lettuce I need to buy starts. Where else am I going to get 24 heads of lettuce for $8.99.

Tonight I needed to do some sewing. There was a fitted sheet that got a tear and Grim's jammie pants ripped ( cheap store bought ones), anyways.... As I was sitting here sewing, I thought how lucky I am. Yep, lucky to be darning. I feel that way because I had the forthought to learn how to do it. I have the ability to put that knowledge into action. And that I have the tools at my disposal. It makes me know that know matter how good or bad things get there is still a basic knowledge of simple survival in me. Kewl, huh?

Grim and I will be going tomorrow to get the supplies to put up the fence and gate to keep the gaurd dog from using my garden as his personal potty! It is just 4 posts and wire fencing. I would so love to go and get a couple of chickens to toss in there but my neighbor would complain to the city, I'm sure! Since we will be at the big home improvement store I think I will get the lumber to make a couple raised boxes for my mom, a gallon of paint to get the dining room done, and the chair molding to keep all the scratches off the newly painted walls. Oh, and I need to look at a new fan for Mouthy's room.

Now I'm tired so I'm off to bed!

The most amazing thing

I found onions that I must have missed last year growing in my front flower bed! The chives in the front pot are up and my tulips that I planted in the fall are showing thier tips!!! Spring is finally here!!!!

The littlest monster were outside cleaning up the doggy mess. They did get out there several times over the winter but it still gets to be such a mess. It was a good thing they did it, since we ended up staying here and having a fire! Good friends, drinks and a fire, ahhhhhh spring!

I had a mole removed today. I even got a stitch. I go back on Tuesday to get a lump/bump removed off of my face. Then the following week I go to get the stitches out. I'm just happy they are going and gone.

If the weather holds then I need to get out and assess the winter damage to my yard. Teenage monster and I already had to dig at the bottom of a section of privacy fence to put in a board as the bottom came loose from the post. I'm just happy that we didn't have to replace the whole panel. I hope that the grapes, blueberries and the apple ! Even though I think I planted them way to early, they helped with the winter that wouldn't end.

Lots to do tonight... Our town does this thing once a month. It is to help increase foot traffic in the historic downtown. Tonight is all about shopping and beer! Like who can't get with the program...huh?!? So we will be down there. I hope to sign up with the women of our town. They do charity things and get togethers. I think it will be interesting.. LOL!

Enough rambling!

Happy Solstice!!!

Did you see the moon last night.... I did and it was beautiful!!! So now winter is officially here, what to do.... LOL! Most of the holiday chores are done for me, yeah!!! Now we will be getting into the what needs to be done before spring thing.... LOL!

Grim and I took my car in to get the front brakes done. Then we had to walk home. It was only about a mile and about 31' out. But I got light headed near the end. After we got home I had a panic attack. God, I hate those things. They scare the bajesus out of me. Plus, I didn't eat breakfast before we went to therapy this morning and I took all my vitamins on an empty stomach.... I know, stupid!!! I'm feeling better now.

I forgot to tell you all I got the hamburger and all the chicken canned up. Very happy with the results. I got 11 pints of burger and 10 pints of chicken. My pantry is becoming more well rounded. I still have not gotten into the freezers to can up what's there. But I fear I had better soon. The light on the big freezer is blinking. So what I'm hoping is that I can get in there and clean it out, defrost it and it will be good as new. Well, I can hope. Either way it will be cleaned out and ready for fresh food!

We bought the paint for Mouthy monsters room. I was in there last week and I cleaned it all out. Toys, clothes and garbage went. Now she has room for whatever Santa brings. Of course while I was in there cleaning, I noticed that the paint is showing it's age. So another room to get done before the end of the year. I was suppose to paint the hallway over the summer, never got around to it. Maybe I will knock it off also, next week.

I'm almost feeling like I miss Christmas and it isn't even here yet.... Sounds odd I know. But being done with all the major stuff and not having to stress is going to some getting use to.... LOL! This kicking back and relaxing during the holidays is a wild concept. Who knew, the holidays could be like this.

I think I'm going to sew up some of the aprons I cut out a couple weeks ago. With them done maybe I can get a few more cut out..... This free time thing is kewl..... Oh, yeah, I'm going to make play dough with the little ones today. Here is the recipe that I will be using... and probably put together the gingerbread barn..... Yep, gingerbread barn! I got that at Tractor Supply..... I love that store.
