What a contrast

Mind you I didn't take any pictures because it was really just to yucky to remember in film. Yesterday, we got hit with our first winter storm. No snow for us, but we did get a nice think layer of ice. And now today its all gone! Yesterday, the street lights stayed on all day and the sun is out right now.

Still hard to believe that on Christmas day it was almost 50 and just 3 days later an ice storm.

I spent most of the day in bed yesterday under the weather. A bit of a cold and something going on with my stomach. Good thing I had made turkey noodle soup for supper the night before. That's what I ended up eating most of the day. Water and tea as I didn't want to cause any type of phlegm.

The monsters and I watched Death Becomes Her, with Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis. I have seen it before but they hadn't. So we had a good laugh at it. Then I played with my phone and went through a seed catalog.

I'm feeling better today. My stomach is still weird, will have to make an appointment next week to see the doctor. Just want to rule out anything serious. I'm thinking the cold is on its way out as well. Thank the gods for that! I hate being sick

A Week of Limbo

This week that falls in between Christmas and the New Year always seems to be in Limbo! The hustle and bustle of the holiday is over. Gifts have been unwrapped and food eaten. The hype has died down. The New Year holds promises yet to be fullfilled! But this week....

This week is an odd one. I want to be idle because of the excitement of the last week, but I seem to have a ton of energy to get things tidied up and put away. Last night I straighten up my bedroom and was looking for other things to do. I don't know if its because the days are slowly getting longer. Or if its because I want so badly to get back to the property to get started with everything there.

My house will be put right between these trees. 16 x 20

My orchard will be placed here. 22 trees in all.

Break between the house and the orchard. We have to thin this area out, due to the giant ant mound pushing the trees over.

Sweet dreams of things to come!

Wild daisy's

Red Dogwood

Its hard not to yearn for this, as right now I'm cuddled up under an afghan and the furnace is on. So many plans, so many dreams, just waiting!

It just needs to happen!

We are all set, almost everything is done. The cookies are made, the presents are wrapped and there are still 2 things in transit. But that is what it is and out of my control. The food has all been purchased and just needs to be made.

Might have to make boxed stuffing for the day as my kitchen aid is making really weird noises. It started while making the first batch of Toll house cookies the bowl jumped off the holder and it was still mixing. I shut it off and righted the bowl. Then when I started it again, it made weird noises. I continued to use it as I had 4 more batches of Toll house to make and a double batch of peanut butter and a single batch of russian tea cookies. Plus, I also got a double batch of sugar cookies in the fridge for later. ( My mom helped the girls and they unfortunately were not share worthy so we had to eat them)

I was able to do 2 Thirty-One Gift shows this month. I had great success with both of them. Very Thankful to have this company in my life. It helps to make things easier!!! If you ever want to know about the product or the company. Please feel free to ask away, I love talking about the company!!!

Here is week 17 completed! This week also contains the new orange as the old orange just came up short! Hopefully, I will get sometime this week to start on 18. So hoping to be done by the new year!

I have all the ingridents to make puppy chow, chex mix and magic bars... Just need to find the energy to get them done. I'm off to finish my supper before it gets to cold!

Weird Weather

When my girls were coming home for Thanksgiving, the weather delayed them a full day. Snow, freeze and high winds, were the cause. On the way home for Christmas break they enjoyed rain. And its raining now. Middle of December and we have rain. Considering that I only turned the furnace on, on November 21st, this is crazy. They are saying that it might be in the 60's Christmas day! It is so strange, my Lilac's are all thiking its Spring and they are budding and leafing out again. I really hope this winter doesn't kill them. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

The littlest monster completed training for level one of roller derby! Very proud of her! She has only been roller skating since September and now she is on a team!!!! The other 2 are going to be going into Rugby. This ought to be interesting... LOL!

We went to see my MIL the other day before the girls came home. She was moved to a different room away from the room mate that she didn't like. Trust me when I say the feelings were mutual. The roommate would actually steal my MIL's things and hide them. But glory be... she is in a different room and now has access to the window. Her new room mate is catatonic. We had hoped for someone a bit more lively.... But.... At least she can now look our the window. Just remember OLD SUCKS!

I am slowly making my way through week 17 of Sophie. I really need to just force myself to sit down and get it done. Now the girls are home, so much is going on. I want to visit with them. I'm still hoping before the end of the year to have it finished.

The time came for me to get rid of my SUV. There were just so many things that went wrong all at once. Grim and I decided that it was smarter to get me into something new as mine was literally falling apart every time I started it. Luckily, my dad worked for Ford and we were able to get the employee discount. I ended up getting the smallest SUV. The Ford Escape. Its Blue and drives very well. Even though I only have 1 monster home full time. I still go so much that I need the bigger cargo area.

I have no gifts wrapped yet. There actually are 3 gifts still in transit waiting to be delivered. I will probably have the girls wrap each others things and Grims things. We need to get some baking done. I have a whole list of cookies that I need to make as well as breads. The list is quite huge and very daunting. So huge in fact, I almost don't want to do it.... LOL! I know I just need to make one type at a time. You know, break it into small pieces. Ah, the joys of the Holidays! :)

Well, I'm not getting anything done sitting here typing!

So far behind.....

The pecking continues. But at least I know that what is happening is not Earth shattering and eventually, the mild irritaion will go away and I can get back to my gloriously boring life.... LOL!

Christmas, has been almost bought and paid for! Hooray!!! There are a few things that are still in the dreaded transit stage. Fingers crossed they will arrive on time!

I have been so busy doing nothing. I get up with great intentions and then.... its bedtime.

Where did my day go? What did I accomplish? This has been the last week and a half.

I know I have gotten some cleaning done, or else we wouldn't have had dishes to cook with and eat off of to dirty again. I know I had to vaccuum, because the dog ripped open a 4 pound bag of sugar that was on the floor waiting to be put away. I know I made 2 loaves of banana nut bread also evidenced by more dirty dishes. I have crocheted a bit. Week 14, 15 & 16 are done.

Grim also purchased more yarn for me as I not only can't count but I also don't understand gauging. Luckily, I still had some yarn here that I could use, so only 6 skeins are new. All said and done this blanket will have used almost 20 skeins of yarn. This thing is already massive and I still have weeks 17 - 20 to do.

Well, I probably go do something... LOL!

Let the Pecking Begin

One of my favorite quotes when things start to go Sideways is "Its like being Pecked to Death by Ducks"! Which really can't happen, because a duck pecking isn't deadly, just annoying! And that brings me to today!

I have a great life, and if something were to change in my life, it would still be great!

Yes, it would be scary or sad or even downright depressive!

But the core of my life would remain.

I would still wake up in the morning. Loving people that are here and that have passed over. I would still have plans and dreams, even if they had to be shelved for awhile. I would still have my faith and that everything happens for a reason. We might just might not know that reason.

Every day upon waking, I'm given a choice to be happy with what I have or to be left in a state of misery for things out of my control!

Today, I choose Happy!

Tomorrow, might be a different story.....

But for what I can control, my own self be true!

Today is the day to Smile Loudly!

So much, Yet....

So much has happened. Yet, it is all small things that make up life isn't it?

I started feeling better, but Grim and I spent the day in bed on Saturday watching The Returned. Weird show. Happy I had a gift certificate from Swagbucks to be able to purchase from Amazon. So we have completed the whole first season. Now we need to get into the second that is currently on tv. Maybe HULU will have it?

I needed to get a lamp for my desk. Since moving into my studio, the overhead light and the pole lamp just don't give the right light. Luckily, I had one in the dungeon.... LOL! (basement), it just needed a good cleaning and a new shade. Grim and I went and picked one up yesterday. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to paint the lamp so that it matches better.

Grim, worked in the garage on the car. I got to help.... It now runs again! We are absolutely thrilled about this. He was able to get the new heater core all hooked up. So once we get the new spring for the unit we will have heat. He needs to get a brass fitting for the transmission cooler lines. For some reason the ones we have just didn't want to work properly and got messed up. Easy fix if we can find the part.

My 81 year old neighbor locked her keys in her car and needed a lift to her grandsons house to get the spare key. She told me, she thought she should get one of those cellular phones. She is such a sweet lady.

I finished off my Outlander inspired shawl. Still need to tie in the ends. But I was able to find my shawl pin and model it last night. Very happy its done. I've already picked up the needles and started the shrug that is an official Outlander pattern. I'm using Lionbrand  Landscapes in Boardwalk 201. So even though this is the official pattern its not the coorordianting colorway.

It has been 17 years today that my dad has been gone. This is the first year I haven't relived every memory as it happened. Thats not to say that I didn't think about it. Like right now its 8:14, he died at 8:35. I'm typing here instead of reliving each minute leading up to his passing. I will spend the day honouring his memory.

I have already started Christmas shopping. This always makes for a fun time of the year. Nothing handmade from me. One of these years I want to make all of us Christmas jammies. For this year though most of my shopping will be done on the computer and delivered to my door. I can't say what I got Grim, cause he reads the blog.... LOL! But I will say that he will be impressed with what Santa is bringing him, I've asked Santa for a Handmade loom and a Handmade spinning wheel. This year its about what we need vs what we want. I really need to learn how to spin and how to weave. *Smiles*

Tired of Resting

Ever get to the point when you just get tired of resting. Thats how I've felt most of the week. I know I need to rest and stay warm to get better. Plus, trying to walk my 5 miles a day was totally out of the question as weak as I was.

So what's a girl to do, you ask?

I had yarn in my hands and on my lap most of the week.

Week 10 of Sophie's Universe Complete

And of course I just had to finish Week 11 also!!!!

Only 9 more weeks to go. I did have to go and purchase another hue of pink. Its the first color to run out!

Spent the Weekend in Bed

Yep, that's how sick I've been. Grim and Little Miss, took care of the household chores and the care and feeding of the momma! I'm out of bed today as its Monday and no matter how I feel I need to get back to the tasks at hand. The first one really should be going back to bed as I feel so weak. I will try to keep plugging along as long as I can though. Because that is what I do. That's how I end up getting so sick that I have to spend 2 days in bed. I know, I know.... I'm a stubborn one!

I was able to get a couple rows done on the Oulander inspired shawl. That didn't happen until last yesterday evening right before walking dead came on. Other then that I didn't feel up to doing anything.

It was 30 degrees this morning. I still have 1 window fully open, I'm hoping the sickness that is floating around the house floats out the window. There are a couple of windows that are closed but the storms are still open. This is due to the fact that the weather is still wonky.  We are suppose to get 60 degree weather still this week. Crazy. No wonder why I got sick.

So far this morning I have taken Little Miss to school, had my cuppa coffee, read the blogs and now written the blog. I'm contemplating if I should bundle up under Sophie and get started on week 10 or do I wrap up in another blanket and work on the walking dead shawl? Decisions, Decisions!

Weird Day

I am under the weather. What ever this funk is that I've been fighting for the last 2 weeks seems to be winning. Uggggh!

Which really sucks, because I have a 31 party tonight. I'm ready to go, its just that I'm so tired and my nose is uggy and my throat is coated in yuck. But at least I don't appear sick. Yeah, me!!!

I got all of week 1 done with the Walking Dead Yarn Colorway MKAL, from Jimmy Bean Wool

It reminds me of a line from Road House.... You play pretty good for a blind guy and I thought you'd be bigger! LOL! Since gauging still is a problem for me. I went to Ravelry to see what others got in size. One was 8 & 15, then the next was 8.5 & 15.5. Mine is 9 &18. We shall see how this turns out. Since I'm behind because of a needle issue, I have been able to see upto week 3. I think I'm really going to like this once its done.

This year really has been about spreading my fibre wings! I have done stitches I didn't even know existed. I completed my first CAL. Gave this one to my MIL for Mothers day! This was done with the help of the Crochet Crowd & Mikey!

Realized that I hate the color pink, while learning this stitch! LOL! Ok, well just really have a huge dislike!

Started another CAL. This one is a monster! Can't wait to get done so I can get started on the other 2 CAL that are waiting in the wings!

Made clothing for myself! First time ever! Ok, other then hats and shawls oh and scarfs!

And trying my hand at pattern making!

Great Saddness

With a heavy heart, I come here tonight to write about a great friend.
Even though we never met in person, I felt like I knew her, her family and her car!
We even both had baby cows named after us.

Photo borrowed from A Homesteading Neophyte

She had a great sense of humor and was always ready to lend a encouraging word or paragraph.

We all knew she was ill, she never kept that secret.

Even when she stepped away from blogging she still checked up on us.

The greatest gift she imparted to me was to live it to the fullest, do what you can, while you can, until you can't.

Spread your wings and fly high my friend,
you will be missed!

I will end this post with her words,

Smile Loudly. Life is such a Gift!

Apple Goodness

I was searching for some apple recipes to try out. Since I found what looks to be a couple of really good ones, I thought I would share. I think the apples I have will be put to the dehydrator though, I will be heading to my favorite orchard in the next few days to get fresh ones to use in one or more of these!

Week 9 Completed

Week 9 of Sophie's Universe is completed! I would love to move on to week 10 but the weather has been so crazy. It was 65 degrees yesterday. The sun shone brightly! To be perfectly honest who really wants a 4.5 foot blanket draped on them when it is so beautiful out. I know I don't. Never fear though, I have been keeping busy. I have been working on my shawl, the hexies, the scrap-ghan and the MKAL with walking dead yarn. Once the weather turns back to normal temps, I will get back to Sophie and hopefully, get started on Spice of Life! And maybe even get my studio photo ready!

Toad in a Hole

Where have you been my whole life. Honestly, I think if I would have known about this earlier my life would have turned out so much different! LOL! See I absolutely love grilled cheese sandwiches and I adore dipping eggs. When I was younger I would fry an egg and add it on top of bread that was crisping up in a ton of butter, then I would layer cheese on top, another piece of bread, flip and crisp that side with a ton more butter. So when you cut into it you had melting cheese and warm yolk.... Just divine!!!!!!

The down side to doing that is making sure the egg doesn't over cook and the bread doesn't over crisp and that the cheese doesn't burn.

I haven't made this dish in years. About 2 months ago, I came across the recipe for Toad in a Hole!

Smush the bread in the middle, add the raw egg and top with cheese. Bake and all your wishes come true, well now really, but.....

What you get is a dish you don't have to babysit and not covered in a ton of butter. Actually no butter at all!

Yummmmmm!

I caved!

So Grim and I got talking the other day as we usually do. And the discussion turned to the broken oven that sat in the kitchen. The oven used to work and then the igniter got funky, and would cause the oven to shoot flames out of the vents. So I choose to stop using it. At one point we tried to fix it. Lets just say that didn't go quite as well as we hoped. With the oven out of commission I used the space to house all of my cast iron pans. Not a bad trade. Then a few months ago the burners started acting up. Not wanting to light, even though it was clicking like crazy. One burner had flame for miles and the other barely anything on high.

I muddled through because I really didn't want to spend the money. I have used the toaster oven, the counter top electric roaster and my numerous crock pots to bake in. Everything has cooked well. But Grim got thinking about all those Christmas cookies that I use to make and didn't last year. (It was such a nice break not to make them all). Of course out come the puppy dog eyes and the begging from little miss and Grim. They want Christmas cookies and everything else an oven can offer.

Who am I to deny my family one of our biggest traditions. So off to several stores we went until I found what I wanted. American made, big oven, griddle, 5th burner and broiler on the bottom.

So here she is! The latest and greatest addition to Grim Wytche Farms!

Guess, I will be making bread before this weekend is out!

Happy Halloween!

Abandonment Issues

I'm back, did you all miss me! LOL! We went up to see our monsters that are away at University! It was a great couple of days. We really missed them. We missed them so much we even brought the oldest her boyfriend. The first night we were there we went to the schools hockey game. Home team won! It was a great game. Very old school, if you know what I mean. The next day rained all day. So whats a family to do?!? We went shopping. Even the fella's got in on it. I was finally able to get a pair of winter boots. What I should say is that I finally able found a pair that I love. They have water proof stitching, wool lining and they are knee high. I even got myself a pair of lifetime warranty wool socks. If they ever get a hole in them they will replace for free. I'm thrilled about this part! Can't go to the dorms without going grocery shopping. You know for the kids that didn't pay attention to the fact that mom usually buys sale, couponed, or discounted items. They now have enough food to get them through till they come home at Christmas.

The next day we hiked on of the big hills and then we went out to the bog. We also got to meet all of the friends. It was nice to be able to put a face with a name.

We are all home safe and sound. The trip took me completely out of my routine. But I did pretty good. Grim has been home this week on vacation. So we have been trying to get stuff done around here.

Tuesday, we got the engine put back together. We need to get the timing reset and it should be good to go... Well, as good as a car with no fenders can go! Soon, she will be back together completely.

Wednesday, we had to go and pick up a dresser for his mom who is in a nursing home. The one she had didn't work very well. So my SIL purchased a new one, and since we are the only ones that have a truck we picked it up and delivered it. Then we met up with my SIL and her family and had supper together at our favorite Chinese restaurant. Oh, almost forgot Grim got a laptop of his own. Now he doesn't have to be stuck in the basement by himself on the old desktop.

Today we have been running around like crazy. Doing a ton of little things and one big one. Grim got me a new stove. Its a whirlpool, made in the USA. I'm so happy. Its going to be delivered tomorrow and I will be baking bread before the day is out. Little miss says she gets dibbs on using the oven first to make cookies.... LOL! We really have missed having an oven. I can't wait to put the electric roaster in the closet.

It was 38 this morning. I'm hoping for November 15th before turning on the furnace. We will see. Last year we made it to November 9th. 2 of the windows are completely shut, storms and all. I foresee more being shut up soon rather then later. But they are calling for 60+ next week. This weather is crazy.

Gotta go do dishes,

Feeling Accomplished

With everything said and done. I ended up with 49.5 quarts of tomato puree out of 2 bushels. 1 quart jar of dehydrated yellow peppers from about 1/4 bushel. 1.5 quarts of Sweet Hungarian peppers dehydrated from 1/2 bushel and a pint of dehydrated green peppers from 6 average peppers. I was also able to get 6 bags in the freezer of 28oz each of pumpkin puree. That came from 17 pie pumpkins.

Not sure if I'm going to do anything else. But I know for this week I'm done. With yarn projects on the hooks and house cleaning to do. I think its still going to be a busy weekend!

Mind Numbing

With Sophie's Universe in the works and week #9 finished. And with a flurry of last minute preparedness happening in the form of tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins.... Oh my! I needed to so something I didn't have to think about. Now before I go and offend... That is not my intention.... I can knit, doing just the knit stitch without looking at or counting each and every stitch. I am making a shawl of my own design. Very simple. Knit, yarn over and continue knitting to the end. Turn and repeat. See mind numbing.

But that is just what I need right now. Not to count stitches, learn new ones, figure out if I can flub a mistake or have to frog the whole thing. Tiring! I love Sophie, and I love the little hexies, that I haven't shared yet.

So without further ado!

As you can see its Heartland by Lion Brand. 180 Kings Canyon, In this photo it looks gray to black. It is really green. I am inspired by "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon. Which is an amazing read. I'm only done with 4 of the books and have the rest on audio in the closet just waiting for a little more time.

Really!

Does anyone else hate the weather forecasters? I know I do. I had a ton of work to do yesterday, when I checked the weather. It said that Monday would be very nice but Tuesday (today) would be raining. So added to the list of things I absolutely had to get done, I added running out and getting laundry hung on the line outside as it looked to be one of the last nice days. And since I was doing laundry I got 2 loads hung in the basement as I didn't want to take the chance of them not drying before the rains came!

Its sunny and 59, right now!!!

I could have waited and got all the laundry done outside!

UGGGGG!

Anywho, I got 25 jars of tomatoes done yesterday. Only 24 made it though. I had the strangest thing happen. One of the lids and rings shot off the jar in the canner. I swear I thought it was a shot. Never had that happen before. I also got most of the peppers done. What is left will go into the dehydrator today!

Back to more tomatoes!

Have a great day!

Busy Day!

Today has been that day... Since my feet hit the floor, I've been running! Got Little Miss off to school and came home got some walking done. Had my coffee and breakfast. Then off to the farmers market. I got 2 full bushels of tomatoes, 25 lbs of sweet potatoes, 1/2 bushel of pie pumpkins, 1/2 bushel of sweet Hungarians, plus a few little things.

Then I had to drop off Grim's coat to be fixed. Its leather and I don't do zippers. Simply because it exceeds my abilities. And he wants to be able to wear it at some point this winter... LOL! Then I went to 2 florists and the cemetery to find out how I can order the topiary balls that I see in the winter. Of course no one had an answer.

So off to a yarn store that is going out of business. They had 40% off everything in the store. I should not be left alone in situations like that. I mean really shouldn't have been there by myself. I ended up with 38 skeins of DK yarn. 19 different colors. This is the first time I've had the opportunity to purchase DK yarn and it will be the last for quite sometime. Then I went to Michael's because I had a 30% off coupon. I got the yarn for What is called the popcorn blanket. Once I start that I will post the site for the pattern.

Then off to Aldi's I went. I had to get the bi-weekly grocery shopping. With that done, it was time for lunch. Since I was out I stopped in at Jimmy Johns and got an Un-wich. Love those things. Then time to head home and unload. This is why I had monsters. They should be here to unload, but alas, I had to do it. I got a work out I'll tell you. Up and down the porch, carrying 25 boxes. There are still 4 big pumpkins in the car. Grim will have to carry those in, I ran out of steam.

Once I ate lunch, I put all the cold stuff away and got started on the rest of the peppers from the last 1/2 bushel. They are in the dehydrator as I type. I need to get dishes done, laundry and finish my steps for the day.

Grim and I will be taking Little Miss for Pizza for dinner tonight. After I will work on Sophie and hopefully, get 1 or 2 of the newest scrap project done. All before I get to sleep tonight.

Attention!!!!

One of my dearest blogging friends Skippy from I Make Soap has fallen ill and is in the hospital. Her husband has asked that we get the word out for those who might not already know. There is an address in the comments section of  "Say your prayers, my friends" to send a card.

Seasonal Changes

I know that Autumn has been here for almost a month. We have even had a really cold snap move in about 2 weeks ago and move out just as fast. The leaves are not just changing but dropping at an alarming rate. But late last night and this morning, real seasonal changes started. I started sneezing last night. I really didn't think about it. I needed to finish my steps for the day so I was outside late, then didn't want to go right to bed so I worked on my Sophie's universe. When I noticed I had a chill. Right then I should have gone and make a cup of tea. But noooooo! I suffered though the chill. I even put on a hooded jacket to go to bed with. Didn't help one bit. I woke up numerous times thoughout the night sneezing. Then by the time I got up this morning, snot and phlegm, sore throat, ear ache and of course way more sneezing. So since this will turn into something fast if I don't act..... Off to the drugstore I went. Because I couldn't find my allergy pills anywhere in the house. In my defense though, I couldn't see much with the watering eyes.

I'm feeling much better now. The sneezing and all the other symptoms are kept at bay. The chill is still with me though, even after having my cup of coffee. Looks like it will tea and soup all day today. I know the family will be thrilled with the prospect of soup of supper.... LOL! Oh, well! At least its a crap tastic kind of day..... So maybe they won't overly mind much!

Again, no pictures of the finished cabbage rolls. But I did manage to get 4 bags full into the freezer last night. They will be pulled out and used around the holidays! I also got 3 trays of peppers dehydrating. There is still more to do but I just haven't had time. Maybe tomorrow!

Good to my Word!

I got started first thing Monday morning. Well, that is to say I got started after about an hour of searching for all of my utensils. My fault I asked children to put things away the last time I used them.... A year ago.

I start with carrots, celery and onion.

Then I mix in the meat and rice and spices.

Peppers are cleaned and the tops cut off.

Into the roaster they go.

Covered in a sauce of tomato soup and homemade tomato juice and of course more spices.

I let it cook on low most of the day. Sorry I didn't get a picture of them finished. But by the time they were cool enough to bag up I was tired. We ended up getting 7 bags of 3 peppers. 21 Stuffed peppers!! Now I know that if there isn't anything in the house to eat. He just has to take a pack out of the freezer and take it to work for lunch!!

As you may have guessed we are a house divided. He's a stuffed pepper man and I'm a cabbage roll kind of girl!

Two heads of cabbage blanched and cooled with the ribs cut out.

29 Cabbage Rolls cooking as I type. The only difference between the spices used is in the peppers I use something called slap your mama. And in the cabbage rolls I added dehydrated kale from last year.

These are the pepper tops from yesterday. I chopped them up and put them in the bowl. Which is 3.5 cups. Normally, to most people that would have been waste. Not here. I will be cutting up the rest of the peppers from the bushel and dehydrating them all.

Not a bad haul, considering that I had no intention of doing anything this year...
LOL!
